Last week, we endorsed 60 new candidates — bringing our grand total up to 369 amazing young progressives running for local office across the country, nearly half women and nearly half people of color, from 44 states plus D.C.
Meet the newbies: https://medium.com/@runforsomething/april-endorsements-bf2f0e112318
Click through to meet Indivisible leaders and Women’s March organizers taking the next step into electoral politics. Get to know the veterans running for office, recommitted to serving their country again, the two public school teachers running for state legislature in Oklahoma, and a young man running to be the first openly gay African American state representative in Michigan. You’re going to love our candidates for state legislatures, county clerks, boards of selectmen, judgeships, and school boards — we even have a candidate for coroner (a position we didn’t realize was both elected AND partisan until Dana joined the Run for Something family.)
Some people might say “these are the future leaders of the Democratic Party!” — that’s shenanigans. These folks are the right-here-right-now leaders of our party, and we’re SO proud to be working with them.
(A reminder: You can read the nitty-gritty of our endorsement process on Medium.)
Two other things to read today…
The Nation published a great piece on why Democrats have to invest in talent development and recruitment pipelines ASAP — this paragraph in particular should scare the crap out of you:
First and most importantly, progressives must invest in leadership development at scale. Progressives’ spending pales to conservatives’, with some estimating a spending gap of four to one. There is no counterpoint to the Leadership Institute, a conservative training ground with a $25 million annual operating budget.
Ozy, a millennial-focused outlet, did a profile of our work earlier last week: “Just as Indivisible created a how-to manual for progressive activism, Run for Something is offering the same for first-time candidates.”
Finally, a heads up: Tuesday, May 8th, is a big election day for a dozen or so of our candidates, so keep an eye on our social media and emails from us for how you can get involved — by making calls from home, sending texts, or whatever else the campaigns need!
Thanks for doing what you can to make this whole thing possible. We’re so glad you’re on our team.
P.S. Travel notes: Amanda will be heading out to LA this weekend for the United States of Women summit — let her know if you’re around!
