Feel-good update: Anna, Aurora, Lina, and Andrea
The Grammy’s were boring; this last week in Run for Something was not.

We did an awesome call with four badass women running for local office this year: Anna Eskamani (FL), Aurora Jones-Martinez (TX), Lina Hidalgo (TX), and Andrea Marr (CA). I admit, I was pretty tired when we started that call, but listening to these four women tell their stories and explain why they’re running was exactly the shot of energy I needed to power through the morning. They are so inspiring.
If you missed it, we sat down with 1A on NPR for a conversation on running for office — both Lina and Anna were highlighted in the first two minutes!
We loved this story on Noelia Corzo, a school board member in San Mateo, CA, who was on the cover of Time magazine last week.
One thing she takes away from her experience with being on the cover of Time magazine is that this is a new time for our nation in which people are breaking barriers. She wants to be an example to others. “I’m super grateful,” she said. “As a young woman of color, I want to show others that if I can do it, they can do it too.”
Also obsessed with this piece from Sean McElwee, about how the Democratic wave will affect local elections in HuffPost:
These races will not just determine partisan control of these local bodies, they will fundamentally reshape the face of American politics. The candidates running now will be the talent pool of the Democratic Party in future races for higher office across the country. These candidates are far more likely to be women, people of color, LGBTQ, low-income and young than current representatives are.
And you MUST read this story about one of our 2017 candidates-turned-elected officials in Atlantic County, New Jersey. We’ll let the headline speak for itself:
Ashley Bennett ran and won after an Atlantic County freeholder’s Women’s March joke; a year later she’s hanging with Whoopi Goldberg.

Finally, as you might know, we do weekly calls for on-boarding volunteers and new candidates. Usually they alternate between Monday and Wednesday nights — this week, we put ’em on the calendar for Friday. And to our surprise, folks hopped on! The commitment of our volunteers and candidates is awe-inspiring.

Thanks for doing what you to do make this all possible. We’re grateful everyday to be in this with you.
Miss last week’s update? Catch up!
