A few of our 2020 alumni…
Erin Zwiener, TX-HD45 — one of the most vulnerable incumbent Democrats in the TX state house, Erin successfully amended the Texas state budget to add funding for examination & investigation of sexual assaults
Yadira Carveo, CO-HD31, successfully co-sponsored a bill calling for comprehensive sex-ed in public schools
Mari Manoogian, MI-HD40, introduced a bill to prohibit corporations from deducting certain expenses incurred while outsourcing work
And our new candidates are just as stellar — people like Rachel Junck, who’s running to bring a fresh perspective to the city council in Ames, Iowa; and Kimberly Sanberg, who is the founding organizer of Minnesota’s first suburban Pride festival and is now running for Golden Valley City Council.
The new class brings our launch-to-date roster to 862 candidates representing 49 states; nearly half of our endorsed candidates identify as women and nearly half as people of color. I promise you: At least one of our candidates will be president one day.
Last week we also gave a quick update on where we’re are as an organization. So far in 2019, we’ve raised more than $1.5 million, which puts us on track to hit our small-but-ambitious budget of ~$3million this year. Since launching in 2017, nearly 20,000 (!!!) people have donated to our cause. While we’re not legally required to announce any fundraising updates — we don’t do federal races so accordingly, we’re not a federal PAC and don’t report to the FEC — transparency is a core value for us. If you ever have any questions about what we’re doing, how we’re spending our resources, or anything else, don’t hesitate to ask.
In other snackable news…
We’ve very proud to be partnering with Georgia Democrats & other organizations on the ground to get folks to run for municipal office in GA. These candidates running will help further voter contact as part of the larger project to flip the GA state house (only 15 seats to do it!!) — a critical state for redistricting efforts.
Congrats to the new members of the Denver City Council, who were officially sworn in last week — including alum Amanda Sawyer and Candi CdeBaca.
“I didn’t realize I couldn’t even win until Danica won at the state level.” — Brianna Titone, RFS candidate and the first openly trans lawmaker in CO, who was inspired by Danica Roem, another RFS candidate and the first openly trans lawmaker in VA. Both are inspiring more trans folks to run & hopefully win.
At Netroots earlier this month, our national political director Sarah Horvitz sat on a panel to talk about the importance of state legislative races. Can’t stop won’t stop beating this drum.
Finally, heads up: We keep a running list of our alumni who now hold elected office. Get to know these names.
Thank you for making all this possible. We’re very lucky to do this work, and very grateful to be on a team with you.
