Feel good update: Two more winners!
Every week, like clock work, more RFS alum are taking office!
Every week, like clockwork: We have new Run for Something winners! Kristie Ferrantella won a seat on the Select Board in Nantucket and Sarah Ullman won a seat on the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council in L.A. Winning never gets old.
In other recent alumni news…
A few weeks ago, Jenn Carrillo (a formerly undocumented immigrant and community activist) won a seat on the Bloomington, IL, city council, taking out a long-time incumbent. Now local conservatives are trying to report her to ICE. She’s not letting it discourage her.
RFS alum Montana state Rep. Barbara Bessette is pushing a bill that will protect the elderly from abuse by their caretakers.
In Tennessee, state Senator Katrina Robinson is pushing for medical marijuana for patients who need relief.
“Young women are gaining much-needed experience in leadership, as well as the representation they’ve been missing, lending a voice to the largest generation of voters yet.” — a beautiful story about young women like RFS alum Avra Reddy and Hadiya Afzal, who are running, winning, and changing the world.
An anti-immigrant Republican in the MN state house tried to take on Rep. Alice Mann, RFS alum, in a debate on granting undocumented immigrants drivers licenses. She made mince-meat out of him. Watch this.
Oklahoma City City Council is now majority millennials, including RFS alum Jobeth Hamon.
In Colorado, the majority-female state legislature — including RFS alum like Brianna Titone and Rochelle Galindo — is getting shit done, like paid family leave, fully funding all-day kindergarten, and pushing four different aggressive climate change legislation. Get it, girls.
One link of really interesting RFS-related reading: When local newspapers shrink, fewer people run for mayor.
Finally, all week long, thousands of people voted for our semi-finalists for the Party for Something alumni awards. Later this week, we’ll be announcing the final two in each category — keep an eye out on Twitter for our big news!
Thanks for making this all possible.
